Repair Tool of the Week: PStart

This one was mentioned in our forums by gunslinger; PStart isn’t exactly a repair tool, however it is an excellent way for organizing your kit when you are on the job. PStart is a stand alone, free application that allows you to turn your files and folders into a “Start Menu” style menu that sits in the system tray. You can add single files or entire folders. It also allows you to make program groups so you can sort your applications by type such as Repair Tools, Tweaks, Installers etc..
PStart also allows you to create an autorun for use on your USB drive. When you plug your USB drive loaded with your repair tools into a clients computer, the PStart menu you created will start automatically. Check out the screenshots to see it in action.

This program has been one of my “must haves” for years. It lets me take many programs with me that I use to have to install on a customers PC. I figured out a few years ago that if I installed Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, and Ccleaner on their computer most people wont even use them or keep them updated. So, I figured, why install them in the first place? They end up calling me out anyway, then the programs have to be updated because they did’nt do it. If they are on dialup internet this can take an hour or more. With pstart I take these programs with me already updated and they don’t have 3-4 useless programs taking up space on their system. Its a beautiful thing.

Sweet! This thing works like a charm. I had been trying to use various other portable “Start Menu” programs like this to no avail. This is easy to set up, user-friendly.

Now, I just plug it in at work and my Firefox browser comes up automatically. I am not in the computer business but I’m the guy my friends come to for help/advice/saving their butts when they lose files or somehow did something stupid with their computers.

With that said, I can’t wait to tell my co-workers about this nifty little program.
