Something that most technicians are familiar with is the whole backup process before a computer format. Backup the My Documents folder, favorites, address books, the desktop and find your way to the Outlook Express email storage which is hidden under many subfolders etc.. It would be great if there was a program that could do all this for you.
Well, there is. AutoBackup is a small, portable application that allows you to pick and choose what you (or your client) want to back up with simple check boxes. The program does the rest. After the format, you can also use AutoBackup to restore all the files back to where they should be. For a list of what AutoBackup supports backing up and restoring, read on.
The application supports backing up and restoring the following files:
- Shared Documents
- My Documents Folder
- Windows Desktop
- IE Favorites
- IE Cookies
- Outlook Express messages and settings
- Outlook Express Address Book
- Outlook PST file
- Windows Activation File
- Office Activation Files
- Opera Bookmarks and Settings
- Firefox Bookmarks and Settings
- Thunderbird Profiles
- Lotus Notes Data
- Dialup Settings (rasphone.pbk)
- Windows Fonts
- TCP/IP Parametres

Nice find
Seems a nice tool make a check list the customers mark off what they want backed up and sign it. If you charge for the backup allow them to opt out on the form but still requires they sign it. That ofcourse is a CYA, Cover Your Ass, tactic that we sadly need.
That will make pre-formats a little quicker to handle, only if it had a driver backup tool as well it will be a perfect must have technicians program… Well done though
Very handy little tool
Very nice find, I have been looking for something like this for a while now. Thank you.
Can I just ask, what do you use to back up drivers?
@ Phil Benwell,
Double Driver is a great application to back up drivers: http://www.technibble.com/repair-tool-of-the-week-double-driver/
Sounds like a nice program and it appears to be free as well… Too bad their site says it does not work with Windows Vista. I just upgraded a few months ago too, oh well…
It’ll be interesting to see how this works for everyone else–and perhaps there is a similar free program that DOES work with Vista.
