Questions and Answers #2

In the past few weeks I have had many readers ask me computer related questions through comments, forum private messages or direct emails. When I was first starting out, I was lucky enough to have my parents who are both self employed to bounce business questions off of.

Today, you guys can ask me almost any question you want in regards to the computer business and I will have the answers in Fridays post.

These can be “what would you do if…” type questions. Questions about brands, competition, marketing, whatever!

Please refrain from commenting on other peoples comments as it makes it easier to answer questions.

To ask a question, just click the “Comment” link below this text. As always, you don’t have to sign up to comment and you can even post anonymously.

  • IT Support Melbourne says:

    Hi,

Well just wondering whether its a good idea to display prices for repairs on the website ? As i’ve seen according to the site stats, one of the top exit pages appears to be the price list page.

Does it defer potential customers from calling, as they got something to compare with ?

Also, if you could comment on the price list page / graphics on http://www.techitez.com.au/computer-repairs-price-list.html

    Kind Regards.

How do you recommend to make the transition from being that guy that’s really good with computers to that company that fixes computers?

  • Steve Stone says:

The people living in my immediate area are not willing to pay the going rate for tech support.
Most don’t want to pay anything for computer repair.
People in adjoining counties to the south and east on average make more money and are willing to pay the going rate. The problem is 100 mile round trips for me and the price of gas. My solution has been cut a little off my charges if the equipment is dropped off at my site for repair. Any thoughts or comments ?

What has everybody else found to be their most effective form of advertising. I could have burned the thousands of dollars I’ve spent on advertising and been just as happy.

Do you think offering a service where the client pays a flat fee and can call me whenever there is a problem..is this a good model

  • jersey joe says:

    A new Dell Vostro 1000 15.4″ laptop is $400.
Almost any significant repair is atleast half that amount.
Why would anybody pay for a normal repair when you can just buy a new laptop for $400?

    Hi,
I am in search of the good online backup company that can be an excellent tool for my customers and at the same time make me some profit. What would be your recommendation?
    Thanks

    Hi Bryce,

I found this tool, not free but not expensive. I dont know if you knew about it but I think Technibble is the place to test a tool and maybe become Tool of the Week.

  • My question is, I seem to get my clients in groups. I will have 3 calls in one day, then nothing for a week. They also seem to cluster around the first half of the month. Is this anything that others have experienced?
I think it could either be a factor of when people receive their paychecks, or maybe something is up with Google Adwords.
I use Google ad-words extensively for my advertising. I have it set to auto budget and I get the same amount of searches and click throughout the month. So, could there be a bug in their algorithms, or am I just seeing patterns that aren’t there?

  • Jersey joes comment is one of interest, with new laptops and PCs being so cheap to buy customers are starting to treat them as disposable ‘white goods’. Who is going to want to pay to have one fixed when a new one (and probably a better spec) is so cheap.

  • Webkinz says:

In regards to paying for computer repairs or buying a new laptop for $400:

I think another issue with people that would rather spend the same amount of money on repairs instead of a new laptop is the sentiment of it. I know I feel comfortable with my old computers because I have been around them so long, so I would rather get them fixed and keep them running instead of paying for a new one and starting fresh.

I hate when something goes wrong with one of my computers and I feel like I might lose the whole thing altogether. Kind of like losing a family member :)

  • Landon says:

Yeah I have found that they tend to come into groups of calls myself. For example, this past week I did 4 calls and made almost 1,000 dollars altogether! The previous 2 weeks, I did only 1 call. :( It’s kind of a bizarre situation how it works out sometimes.
