A report has been released that Microsoft will review product keys for their Windows Vista software. It also notes that they will thoroughly investigate about the reports on tampering system files.

If they had sufficient evidence that a user’s product key was illegally obtained, users will lose access on product enhancements like Windows Update and they may also be blocked from using certain features of Vista.

The reviews will be done periodically.

If they concluded that your operating system has a pirated product key, they will asked you to reactivate your system by entering a genuine product key.
