“Fifty-eight per cent of [students] plan on spending less than $750.00. Only 18 per cent have a budget over $1,000.00. Netbooks are affordable – some costing only $170.00. In contrast, Apple laptops start at $949.00. At a time when many people are experiencing economic hardship, having a new Apple laptop isn’t a necessity,” said Vipin Jain who is Retrevo’s chief executive.

That’s very normal to hear. Students are always low on budget and are already get used to os that comes along with normal notebooks.
Yeah, I guess that one way to look at it. Later when they have to fork over more money for virus protection and having the netbook fixed and the OS reinstalled the price of that Mac might start to look a little better. Also the Mac will most likely last them until they are out of school and they will be able to sell it for almost what they paid, not so much for the netbook kid.
I totally agree with you. I will also always recommend Mac because of long term advantages, which are surely much greater then normal notebook’s one.
how about a middle option… hackintosh netbook?
In other news, students are more likely to buy Netbooks than high end Laptops.
This is (as said in other comments) a “Well Duh!!!”. Students are going to buy what is in their budget (we hope). I knew many students that did not. However these students would not have bought a Mac regardless. The school work would did not have anything for a Mac at the time (mid 90’s IT / Business school)
This survey is useless, its telling us that students will be students when it comes to computers.
There was a study done last year ( I’ll post the link if I can find it ) were over 1,000 students getting ready to enter college were getting a new computer. 70% said they would be getting a Mac.
