Windows users can now download Microsoft’s antivirus software called Security Essentials. It protects against malicious files such as Trojan horses and worms.
The beta version was released in June on some countries such as U.S., Brazil, and China.
The sofware can run on XP, Vista, and 7 machines. It is not meant to compete with other antivirus software such as the ones from McAfee and Symantec.

Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s not meant to compete.
It’s meant to devestate. And if it performs as good as it’s rumored to, it will devestate the AV Market.
Addendum: For home users and Home based businesses only.
If it’s based on the same engine as Live One Care… I’m not going to be impressed.
During an on-demand scan, MSE found 89 percent of malware samples; but only 30 percent of commercial keyloggers. Those results were average, according to the editor. MSE found 67 percent of rootkits. The suite detected half of the editor’s scareware samples. The suite’s real-time protection found 83 percent of malware and blocked the majority of them. In this test, 40 percent of the commercial keyloggers were found. MSE found 78 percent of the rootkits. The editor expressed optimism MSE would improve during its beta testing period.[19]

I hope av-comparatives.org does a ditty on them.
Considering that I’ve directly clients to free AVs (Avast! being the best of the bunch in my personal opinion), I’m all for there being another free option to choose from. Anything to get rid of the bloatware and registry hell that McAfee and Symantec.
You can bet Microsoft’s long-term goal is to monitor users for the government. This is their foot in the door….your door.
Bill Gates isn’t meeting with David Rockefeller and storing seed in Norway for nada!
@TechPro
I was not aware that this was the youtubue conspiracy comment list.
Also I hope this does not suck as much as windows defender or live one care.
I am sceptical of any microsoft product being secure. The nature of the OS is just to weak for security. I do hope for some success on their part even though it will cut into my business greatly. I remove a lot of Malware. I am sick of removing malware and I really do not feel that I can keep it off customers computers anymore. My spam filter has been blocking a dozen attempts a day by the new Zeus variant that only activates to steal banking information.
I have been moving more customers to Linux. I am quite surprised at how well they are adapting to it. It is the only way for now that I can feel they are safe.
If I read this correctly it is not an AV product, it would suppliment one providing protection against malware. Is it tested and playing nice with real AV software?
I would always stay with well know security and antivirus companies. MS is not one of them for sure.
