Microsoft released a patch for a previous Internet Explorer patch on Thursday. On the 8th of Augist Microsoft rolled out the MS06-042 patch for Internet Explorer which unwittingly introduced new security problems for users running IE6 SP1 for Windows XP SP1 and all versions of Windows 2000. Users on XP SP2 were safe from harm.

Soon after the original update was released users began complaining that versions of IE with the patch were experiencing crashes after visiting websites that use HTTP 1.1 compression.
If that wasnt bad enough it was soon revealed that this bug could be used to inject hostile code into critical systems.

“The revised version of MS06-042 released on 24 August fully resolves the security vulnerability discussed in Microsoft Security Advisory 923762 and addresses the issues discovered prior to release,” Microsoft said in a statement accompanying the release. “Microsoft is not aware of any active attacks against customers using any of the vulnerabilities associated with MS06-042.”
