How to remove the About:Blank Hijacker

Shares

The about:blank hijacker installs a browser helper object into Internet Explorer which significantly slows down your internet connection. An infected PC will display a fake directory webpage when IE is opened with the words ‘about:blank’ in the address bar. Here are the instructions to remove it.

First of all, Download AboutBuster.zip by right clicking and choosing “Save Link As..” or “Save File As…” here: AboutBuster.zip

Once downloaded, double click on the AboutBuster folder and double click the file AboutBuster.exe inside the zip file. Click extract all on the box that shows up and click Next.

Choose a location you would like to install AboutBuster. For example: My Documents.

Make sure the “Show Extracted Files” box is ticked and then click Finish.

Load into Windows Safe mode by restarting the computer and just before the Windows XP screen comes up, press F8 and choose safemode

Open AboutBuster from the location you extracted it to and click “Begin Removal”. This will close any Explorer windows you had open (if any) while it works.

AboutBuster will check your computer for any malicious files and if it asks you to scan again then allow it to do so.

When AboutBuster has finished click Save Log as you may need this later.

Restart your computer into safemod again.

Run AboutBuster again and do the same instructions as above. Once it finishes reboot into normal Windows mode.

You should now have removed the about:blank infection.
