Sophos has an article about donation scams regarding the recent earthquake in Haiti.
The first example shows a long message which is supposedly from UK Red Cross. It wants the reader to send money via Western Union. SavioL, the author of the article, notes that the “From” email address does not say Red Cross. Also, the “Reply-to” adress is a webmail account which is typical of other scams such as the Nigerian/410 scams.
The second example also wants the reader to send money using Western Union.

Yes, this is very said to hear..
The only real positive things from this big tragedy are donations. Surely, there will never be enough donations to bring victims back…
Working on a machine yesterday that had Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware installed, and a system tray pop-up appeared, inviting Ad-Aware users to donate to their relief fund.
Hope the marketing dept. intern that came up with that idea is looking for a new job today…
There are always people out there all set to make money from this tragedy. This goes to show how desperate some people can be. My advice is to never send money to people you have never heard of. Always check with friends and family before making any donation.
I think they should grow up, really. If they are that poor then get a job.! Goodness, people what kinda world do we live in? When other humans need money need our help! We try to take it! It makes me sick! Ugh.
