I ran across this story about John Deere invoking the DMCA to block farmers from fixing their own tractors because of the proprietary software in the machines. GM is saying some of the same things.

We know that Apple and others refuse to sell parts and want to handle all repairs themselves.
I saw this organization, referred by iifxit.com and thought it was interesting. http://www.digitalrighttorepair.org/ I am not sure how successful they can be , but its good to have someone out there calling attention to the problem.
