I have a customer who owns a franchise (No name to protect corporate and Franchisee identities) and he received an email from corporate.

Interesting to know how much they need to dish out to Microsoft to continue to receive updates for Windows XP.

"We've communicated that Microsoft® will end its support for Microsoft Windows® XP in April 2014, which will impact PCI Security Standards compliance in the retail industry. As most of our network is on POS XX which relies on Window XP, we are taking several steps to help protect you and your customers' data during our continued use of Windows XP machines.
We are entering into a Custom Support Agreement with Microsoft. This agreement will provide critical patches for our Windows XP machines in the field as well as designated Technical Account Manager to assist us in case any issues arise. We are also expanding our software patching routine to ensure third party software is patched and kept up to date.
Providing PCI compliance features has been a key factor in our development of the new, more highly developed Point of Sale (POS) system for our network. As such, we are working to provide the enhanced POS system as soon as it meets our network requirements.
We will continue to update you on this important issue. "
