Shocking but not suprised, as i does happen, it is a shame that it does happen because we all get tared with the same brush, and i only look at customers data if i am doing a data recovery, to make sure that is all been recovered or if i am doing a virus clean, to make sure that there is no virus hidden in there.

You get unscrupulous car mechanics, plumbers, electricians etc so why would computer repair technicians be any different. It's more a reflection on society than our industry.

They also don't report how many shops repaired the laptop without accessing private data and charged a fair price.

It's muckraking investigative reporting masquerading as serious journalism. Every industry has it's share of bad actors, characters and desperados. Here in the U.S., local newspapers and television stations periodically run a sting operation like this. A recent expose' in my area was on unscrupulous house & business cleaning services. Sensationalism sells. Notice that the one shop in this story that got it right only got a passing mention, whereas the most egregious miscreants got all the salacious copy.

Becuase this is the type of journalism we get today I practicly don't follow the news anymore. Everything is so slanted for shock value to grab peoples attention I lose any intrest I had in knowning more about word events.

My friend has just linked me this news.... very disapointed gives us all a bad name. Just thinking of new Techs getting into the business.... im lucky that I am a member of the BCS here in the UK. Just a warning to all the new techs get or pass the exams for a professional body or even become CITP... to show you are a true professional in the IT industry.

What kind of software did they use that took pictures of them in the act and where they copied the info to?

I always think do they ever get a tech who says to them "I fixed you problem but you might have some bigger concerns. I found a hidden system that appears to be designed to spy on the users including the use of a camera."

Reporting like this does hurt our credibility to people who are already skeptical. At the same time, stories like this let techs know that you can get busted for being unethical. I just believe if you cheat people or are unethical it will come back on you, and you will be exposed.

The best thing is to just be honest. Think of all the people those techs juiced out of hard earned money, or all the privacy violations they committed. They just got caught.
