Apple actually has software to migrate from PC to Mac, but don't know of anything to transfer the other way around (Can't figure why anyone would?). But manually rebuilding the account should be easy enough.

Usually you can use ubuntu. Just make a user with UID 501 to get around permissions, and you can copy the files off.

Agreed with Compnet (you can just run 'sudo nautilus' from an ubuntu terminal and you'll get around the mac permissions); I don't think there's any software so you'll probably have to do it manually

Didn't understand by your wording of the original post that you were looking for a read/write solution between platforms. I assumed that was given and you were looking for an application to port data between the two. Glad you got it figured out.

Just a related question; does the Windows Migration Assistance in Lion do a pretty good job usually?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796

I guess it does the transfer over the network; I've never used it personally though.

I've used it a few times and it works very well. I sometimes have to move over things that are non-standard on the PC side (strange mail clients, etc.).
