If Crash plan displays this message 'Unable to connect to the backup engine, retry?'
Open services.msc in Windows go to Crashplan and Start the service.

Yup, I just went to services and started/restarted Crashplan and I was backup again.
I have had this problem for so long off and on as well as 4 other peoples computers I know where crashplan won't connect to the backup engine for days and then all of a sudden it starts working again. All users are Windows 7 64bit.
