Default SP3 Issues and Problems

Thought I would start a new thread for issues and problems with SP3, separate from the link to the download... Please ONLY use this thread as a tool to discuss issues and problems with SP3 and help people with these problems...

BEFORE YOU INSTALL SP3...

Running low on hard drive space - check out the disk space requirements from MS - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947311/

MS recommends disabling antivirus / antispyware programs before installing SP3 - but also advises to do so at your own risk

Laptops - make sure the laptop is plugged in - SP3 will not install unless it is running off of AC power!

Share you computer with the family? - Make sure that no one else is logged on when you install SP3

Slipstreaming - DO NOT DO IT ON VISTA - there is a bug that will prevent it from working if you slipstream SP3 on your older XP disks if you do it on the vista platform!!!

KB 937468 (a prerelease version of the Remote Desktop Client v6.1) should be uninstalled before installing SP3

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 machines must be updated to SP2 before installing SP3.
SP2 can be found here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue: Installing SP3 on a machine that has IE7 or IE8 Beta will prevent you from being able to uninstall Internet Explorer in the future!

Fix: Uninstall IE7 / 8 beta prior to installing SP3. If you have problems uninstalling them, follow these tutorials/guides

IE7 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177
IE8 Beta - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949787

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue:
After installing SP3, computer cycles into a reboot phase

Fix:

This is a known OEM issue mainly involving HP machines, although others are effected. From the looks of things, it is a problem for AMD based machines.

Best known fix: reinstall XP using a MS OEM disk!

For non tech savvy: Wait until your vendor releases their version of SP3

Get windows to work again: Boot into safe mode, and uninstall SP3.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue:

Boot failure after installing SP3... may be related to AMD chips as above...

Possible Fix:

a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Intelppm
c. In the right pane, right-click the Start entry, and then click Modify.
d. In the Value data box, type 4 , and then click OK.
e. Quit Registry Editor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue:

My wireless stopped working after installing SP3

Fix:

This is mainly effecting dlink adapters. Windows XP SP3 installs a new version of wlanapi.dll file into the c:\windows\system32\ folder.

When you installed your wireless driver on SP2, it replaced this file. When you installed SP3, it re-replaced this file.

Best known current fix is to get the latest drivers for your wireless device and reinstall it.

Additional fix would be to let XP handle your wireless adapter.

To let Windows manage your Wireless network adapter,

1. Click Start - Run and type “services.msc” and press enter.

2. Scroll down to locate “Wireless Zero Configuration”

3. Right-click and select “Start”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem:

After installing SP3, Office will not load unless in safe mode
After installing SP3, Office 2003 will not scan to document

Fix:

The best known fix at this time is to uninstall office and reinstall it

Other possible fixes:

Replace \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\11.0\MSPSCAN.EXE

with old

\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\5040110900 063D11C8EF10054038389C\11.0.5614\MSPSCAN.EXE

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem: After install SP3, my audio stopped working

Fix:

looks like it is mainly a problem with socket 939 motherboards and AC97 audio.

MS knows of this problem and is working on a fix... if you have one, please post it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem:

The address bar disappeared after installing SP3

Fix:

Try this program

http://www.muvextoe.com/release/muve...ssbarsetup.exe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem:
****STARDOCK, Windows Blinds, TuneUp Utilities
I changed my boot/logon screen and now SP3 will not install

Fix:

Remember that if the computer is using any kind of boot image changer like stardock or tune up utilities, or the logon screen image changer, they must be uninstalled or have the original screens reset to the original screens before you can install SP3!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT SUPPORT

Problem:
Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation fails with an error message, and the following error is logged in the service pack installation log: "8007F0F4 - STATUS_PREREQUISITE_FAILED"

Fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949388

Problem:
Error messages when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Service Pack 3 installation did not complete" and "An internal error occurred"

Fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949384/
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known problems on some machines and looking for fixes... if you know the fix to any of the issues, please post!!!

- Firefox will not print after SP3 install
- The font "Arial Black" will only work in italics after SP3 install

Someone at my company had a customer say IE 7 would not open with Vista SP1.

The Tech remoted in, and IE would not open.

Let me know if anyone sees/fixes this.

Thank you.

PROBLEM:

I slipstreamed SP3 onto my XP disk with IE7. Now IE7 Update KB947864 will not download and install. It is listed as O KB in size!

FIX:

This is a pain in the butt... if anyone knows an easy solution for getting this update to install, please let us know!

CURRENT FIX: Reinstall IE7. You don't need to uninstall it, just run the IE7 install file again!

I have had similar issues pre SP3 for different updates typically I can go to the update folder delete all the update files it has downloaded and then auto update will pick it up also you can go download the single update and manually install it.

Slipstreamed SP3 into all my install discs, and noticed on the media center version that internet explorer is not present at all. You can add it via add/remove windows components and it works fine afterwards.

Has anyone else had this problem, or did I do something stupid during the slipstream I wonder?

Additionally, XP home and professional discs were slipstreamed with the same service pack and all is normal there.

i have not had issues with WMC 2005... however, I have had nothing but problems trying to slipstream with WMC 2002 edition!... perhaps instead of slipstreaming use the SP3 IT install as a run once option?

Yeah, this is the 2002 edition. I have tried a new slipstream using the gold media with the same results. Very strange.

also make sure with MCE 2002 you install SP2 before you install SP3. Not doing so will disable the MCE

So that is my problem, however the computer (Emachine) will not boot into safemode. Id rather not have to re-install, keeping it in mind as a last resort.

Before I did the upgrade, I had just installed the new (AMD)motherboard and power supply plus the drivers for the new Mobo. Yes, I do know that the AMD is known for issues with SP3. Darn it.

Advise please?
