Default How Do You Kill Time On Site?

When a big virus scan is running or you're doing a big transfer of data from computer to computer, what do you do?

I mean, yeah if the client is around talk to them. What if they aren't? Do you just sit there and stare at the screen or do you go on the web if you have a laptop?

I have yet to face that situation but since I don't charge hourly I don't see what would be wrong if I work on a web site, surf the web, hell do my homework on my laptop while whatever is being done.

Is there something wrong with that?

Clean the keyboard, clean out their mouse (if not optical), vaccuum out the insides of the computer, blow the dust out of the power supply, straighten and zip tie the inevitable rats nest of cables behind their computer or start filling out the network setting/wireless network settings form from the Technibble business kit to give them for reference when you leave. If I'm in their house, I ALWAYS try to appear busy with their job, even if I'm not totally.

I agree with MHCG on this one, try to appear busy with their job, even if your not.

gotta agree with the above posts,they are paying for your time its only fair that you appear to be busy doing something on their job even if its not a lot.
It also looks good when you do more than was expected even if it is only tidying cables or cleaning keyboards etc.

Yes, I agree, tidying up their work space or giving them some advice on how to stay safe and secure on the web. I typed up an info sheet that I like to hand out and go through with the client on tips and tricks when using the net. This burns a bit of time.

I personally could care less about appearing ''busy"; usually, folks begin laundry-listing you with, "Oh, and could you check this...and that...and this." If I can do so while the scan is occurring, fine, otherwise, they usually forget about it towards the end of the repair, especially if time begins to become a factor because of the scans.

I to agree that you should at least look busy

I will admit I sometime go into the log files & daydream - all that data just sends the people out of the room!!

play tetris during the scans...

or you can clean workarea and ask client if they have any questions and if they are new to computers you can teach them a thing or two.
