have a hp dv9000 laptop that got donated to a charity I work for, the screen lights up but no image at all , the external vga port shows the screen just fine, and switching the screens using the fn key does nothing to resolve it. usually the issue with the dv series is a bad gpu chip , but this shows an image on external monitor so gpu is good
I had a spare dv9000 lcd screen at my shop that i hooked up and its doing the same thing. Im not sure if its the lcd inverter because 1. the ccfl tube lights up and 2. theres no 'ghost image' on the screen so if its not the screen or inverter, could it be a bad cable? the cable i had laying around was no good to test with and i didnt really want to try to order a cable if its not the issue

im not an expert in this area yet, but the only thing you haven't checked is the cable.
General idea is if it outputs to an exteral screen then the video card is good and the screen is bad, but if you replaced the screen with a known good one then it is somwhere in-between. inverter can't be bad because it is lighting both screens perfectly fine. The inverter also has nothing to do with actually showing the image on the screen, it just illuminates it. A cable shouldn't be too much on eBay. |

Don't let it fool you, it's a bad GPU chip. Showing on an external monitor but not the internal monitor is a symptom covered by HPs extended warranty

A lot of HP laptops have had a sort of 'recall' put on them..or some sort of extended warranty. The BIOS code for the cooling FAN was messed up - bad algorithms or something.
Whenever you get an HP laptop, check the list in the above post.
