Do you see the Windoze logo then the black screen? I just had one like that today, was Registry corruption. Boot to the UBCD for Windoze and then used the Registry Restore tool... Lookin' good now :-)

In a case like this i wouldn't esp if the hdd errors seem to be the cause of the boot up issues. I would still try it though for the experience to see what would happen.

Is it vista/win7 by any chance? I have had a similar problem where it was caused by google desktop. There were a good few posts on this on the net. Removed google desktop and voila it was working again.

Didn't have a banjaxed hdd though

Its best that you scan drive with hdd regenerator in scan and repair it is really worth the money to have this in your toolkit.

I then follow up with a chkdsk /r if there are no flagged bad sectors then make an image, i have much more luck getting all data this way.
if i still get BSOD i then use ubcd and use the registry restore wizard.

If i still get a bsod then i try a system restore eitherin windows or use erd and do a system restore if i get a bsod still i do a OS repair.
