Default csrss.exe

For some reason my csrss.exe is constantly eating 20% of my Core 2 Duo 2.5ghz.

I scanned for duplicated copies, scanned with AVG, Malware Bytes, Super Anti-Spyware and Spybot - nothing.

Also it was last modified when I installed windows back in 2005.

I am running XP 64-bit SP3 if that helps. I'm current with updates.

UGH! It's that stupid ATI catalyst control center. I just decided to update my video drivers (suspecting ATI/AMD sucks and can't make a reliable product from past experience) and behold csrss doesn't eat CPU anymore.

But now CCC won't start anymore and I can't rotate my second monitor... Last time I ever buy anything from ATI/AMD. They deserve to be stomped by Nvidia. I've had problems like this with every ATI card I ever owned. The only reason I bought this one is because it had 4 DVI ports. I need them for multiple monitors.

4 monitors, oh the real estate. Might have to upgrade from dual 22" to that. Glad to see you came across a solution.

I didn't quite come across a "solution". I merely found the culprit.

Well the problem just became much larger. CCC doesn't start at all, and I can't make proper use of my other monitor because I can't rotate it. Hey, at least I got my 20% CPU back.

I'm so pissed. Christmas eve and I can't make full use of my computer.

It seems that when I uninstall the CRAPLOAD of USELESS and BLOATED ATI software, it still leaves some CRAP behind that is picked up by the reinstall.

Anyone have any pointers on how to remove the remainder of registry keys/files after an uninstall?

If the use of those programs does not fix your problem you may want to try this as well. I know you said it was using about 20% CPU and this refers to 100% CPU usage, yet it might help solve your problem if you can get CCC to load again and still have a high CPU load.

The load comes from a corrupt user profile and causes csrss.exe to use a heavy load. Maybe downgrading to the previous ATI driver, deleting your user profile, and re-logging in to re-create it may solve your problem.

If doing this, make sure to back up your user folder (my docs, app settings, etc).

I can't link yet since I am new to forum but here it is:

And, Merry Christmas!

Hey thanks a lot for the tips guys, I will try them after Christmas. Right now I don't want to be dealing with this.

Merry Christmas!

I think I'm gonna N&P because a couple of other things don't work like some of the GFX are messed up in some of my games. For some reason also Trillian doesn't show on my screen (it's running in the tray).

Oh ATI, you really got me this time. So if I'm N&Ping then I should at least upgrade from XP to 7. It's time to get with the times, you know? I need to familiarize myself with Win7 anyway.

Now where can I get my hands on a version of Windows 7 for cheap? Ebay?

That junk has caused me so many problems in the past, I refuse to install it anymore. Whenever I work on an ATI card, I strip down the install as much as possible.
