I see a lot of postings for tools of the week - and there are a lot of great free ones listed. I was curios as to what everyone uses that is not free... List your favorite boot disks - repair tools - etc... If you can - list why you like it - and how much it costs.

So what does Active@ boot disk do that others cannot?
Off the top of my head I can't think of many paid for tools that do things much better than the free ones for most things. I'd say Acronis is better than any free alternative but that's not to say you cannot do the same things with free tools but Acronis makes it all very logical and simple. Getdataback seems better than any free tools. Media Tools Professional does a good job of reverse clone, although I believe the free DD Rescue does this. I'm not keen on UBCD4Win as it takes ages to load up the clunky XP interface. I prefer the DOS/UNIX based menu disks which boot in seconds. The latest UBCD beta is pretty nice. By far the best boot CD I've seen is Hirens but of course it is packed with unlicenced commercial software making its use almost certainly illegal. If they did a paid version of that I'd buy it in a minute. |

ERD Commander/msDart are great software, but tricky to get hold of. Sometimes things such as avast! BART CD or the AVG Rescue CD as you can do malware scans, edit the registry and much more, but there's nothing you can do that you cannot do with free stuff, it just makes it easier and is an all-in-one

Hdd regenerator nothing like it on the market repairs bad sectors cost $44.34 CAD bulk prices available.
I have used this tool it just keeps getting better and better it is worth the money i have recovered many hard drives and have yet to see it fail. My rule 4 sectors or less i run hdd regen make an image on dvd give hd and if all smart tests pass 6 hours test i give dvd's to customer not once has a drive gone bad that has passed smart and have had 4 or less errors. There are more than just plain bad sectors there are 2 reasons why a sector may be bad. 1. physical damage happens when hdd regen cannot fix it flags them as bad. 2. corrupted sectors happen on bad shutdowns, power surges in most cases 99% time hdd regen will fix it and it will stay fixed. I have tried spinrite it just can't do what hdd regenerator can and fixes drives MUCH faster with scan and fix option. Most times on data recovery i will run hdd regen then clone drive if drive shows bad sectors it allows me to recover max amount of data that way. |
