Btw - we have changed out failed drives a total of 5 other times and the array rebuilt perfectly

Can't say we have ever seen one netgear rebuild properly yet :/

(not a hater, just only worked with a couple that died)

Pretty sweet.
Had the same experience with Netgear support. Had a drive get corrupt and the unit would not allow us to access it over the network. When it would boot we got a repeating light sequence on front. Did some basic resets and what not that they recommend - nothing worked. Talked to Netgear and gave then telnet access to unit. They worked for hours late in the evening and finally got it booting properly. Didn't charge us anything. I was impressed. Haven't had to deal much with Synology support this far.

Check out a program called logmein backup, its a great program if your wanting to offer backup solutions to your client.

Also a great free app is GFI backup 2009

LOVE Synology! I bought a QNAP NAS earlier this year for our office and had nothing but problems. Quickly exchanged it for the Synology DS412+ and it's awesome and fast! Now waiting for my DS212+ to arrive for my house!

Default HDD for DS212J or other Synology SOHO models?

What HDD is the most stable (IN YOUR EXPERIENCE) with the DS212j or others in the same class for SOHO?

I've had bad experience with Western Digital and wondered what you think of Seagate or other brands that work well, in terms of stability, with Synology DS212j?

I am looking into purchasing the DS212J but unsure of what HDD to buy for the 2 bays. Also, did you configure it for RAID 1? Basically, what HDD brand is the best out there for RAID 1?

Western Digital recently released their Red series of drives made just for NAS devices. This drive differs from their green and blue line in that I believe it allows for more time in its error correction (TLER).
