Default "System Fan Has Failed" - Except It Hasn't...

I've had a HP pavilion Slimline s7310n on the bench for a while now and have not been able to get to the bottom of this--during EVERY boot it says "system fan has failed, will shut down now to prevent overheating."

The thing is there is a fan attached and it is working. It appears similar to this problem: http://goo.gl/jQuhu

Have switched out fans several times, changes CMOS battery, same result.

Ideas??

Everytime I get that error, cleaning or replacing the fan fixes it.. If the fan operates fine and you still get the error, I'm guessing the board isn't seeing the fan correctly and its a bad board, especially if you've replaced multiple fans

Also flashing the BIOS can fix some fan related issues in some cases.

Just turn off the system fan warning in the BIOS, you only need warning on the CPU fan.

You've been replacing the system fan right, not the CPU fan on the heatsink? Are you sure the warning wasn't enabled by default after a bios reset and the system fan header is just empty?

Also if you're using a molex adapter to power the fan; the machine won't be able to see the fan status and this prompt will display.

Its probably a faulty read on the sensor. If there is a way to disable the monitor/error, then just do it and explain to the customer.

Yeah it's plugged into the 3-pin on the board and not a molex. No, there's no way to turn it off or ignore it, it just says that message and then shuts down, end of story. You can't even get to the BIOS to update it.

Does seem like a bad sensor.

Wow, that's an anal mo-bo... Reflow?

P.S. One more reason to hate slimlines.
