Default Dell reinstall using my Windows CD instead of Dell CD

I friend of mine needs me to reinstall Windows. I plan to use my own Windows CD. His "Dell Resource CD" includes Dell "Diagnostics". Does anyone know if Dell diagnostics (that run OFFLINE) can be installed from one of these Resource CD's? Or do diagnostics from the Resource CD only run from the desktop?

If there is an OFFLINE Dell diagnostic test, would that software usually install from the Dell Installation CD (with Windows on it)?

I have survived almost 10 years, without Dell, HP, or any major brand diagnostics crapware, chances are that you can get a free better, faster tool online. Just make sure you backup drivers before the install.

What kind of tools does Dell offer?

Just checked on one of my systems... using the Service Tag# on Dell's Support website, you can download a or more utilities such as this one: Dell-Diagnostics Utility

But do, backup the drivers first. You can go to the Dell website and locate the drivers but sometimes not all of they are listed there.

When I can't find a driver I find this program very helpful. http://drp.su/

I rarely ever use a manufacturer's CD to perform a clean install of an OS. I usually just install the appropriate OS (OEM or Retail) and enter in the COA that is included with the machine. I know this isn't the legal way to do it but for a 10 year old machine, who is going to pay $50-$60 (latest quote from dell for XP media Center Edition set) for a recovery set from a manufacturer, if they even still have them?
