I've got an hp notebook with dual hdds in at the moment. Customer complaining that it's running slow.
After having it running for a while it started playing up.
I noticed a strange sound coming from the second hdd, like clicking and motor having trouble, and this was causing the notebook to hang while it was waiting for the second hdd.
I removed the second hdd, as there was nothing on it anyway, and notebook is going fine now.
I put the hdd into the workshop pc and ran gsmartcontrol over it, both tests, and it passed.

Yes, its good. We have been using it for years on thousands of HDDs and its pretty accurate. Bear in mind that no diagnostics is 100% accurate and some times a piece of hardware will not pop on a diagnostics until it has reached a certain point. That said, if the hard drive was clicking or making weird noises, there was no reason to test it. Also, did you run the short test or the extended test . . . yes, it makes a difference.
