As far as behavior, it acts like a normal search. It searches files and emails. I searched for "blonde" which are in some of his emails and I'm going to insert it now. The issue is the popping up on top of everything else randomly, or at least it appears to be random.
If you want track down the process open Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/bb896653 and drag the target icon (next to the binoculars) onto the search box and watch which process it highlights.

THAT'S the result window from the "mystery search box"?!?

That's Windows' search. Is the F3 key stuck?

Thumbs up Mystery Solved

No, it isn't F3. It is an obscure search button on his Logitech mouse. That came to me a little before dinner. I feel pretty stupid, but at least it is solved. He just needs a different mouse. He has a tremor from Parkinson's and won't be able to not push it at it is right under the scroll wheel. Thank all of you for your input.

Just use the Logitech software for the mouse and reprogram the button to do nothing.....
