Anybody have a link to the correct HDD Regenerator site? Looks like a lot of baddies have glommed onto that search term...

Astradrome is the source shown in Softpedia, who are renowned for vetting their software. At least I think they are the site I'm thinking of as ultrareliable. In any case, there were 145,814 downloads of it from there, so it's been available there around for a while and I would expect it to have been shut down if it were a bogus source. I just bought a license yesterday from dposoft.net and that license works in the version just downloaded via Softpedia/astradrome, so I suspect the author has multiple distribution channels. Be forewarned that the program may take a lifetime to process a larger drive. I gave up on a 640GB drive yesterday when it said there were 67 hrs remaining to complete the scan. It had found and regenerated 326 bad sectors up to that time and it was about 10% done, IIRC.

Edit: MajorGeeks also list the same purchasing agent for the program as I bought from (eSellerate) in the Author link, so I would recommend that link for downloads/purchases.

Do either of these programs have a function like dd_rescue, wherein you can nab what's easily available from a failing drive, then go back and make "x" number of passes to try to get the tougher stuff?

If you are just looking for a diagnostic program for hard drives, then use gsmartcontrol.
