Default Windows 8.0 keeps flashing on the desktop and metro

It is a HP G6, 8GB of RAM etc.

It boots up fine, it logs fine and displays the Metro interface fine, however the second it switches to the desktop mode the screen keeps flashing on and off every 1 second. For example

second 1 - task bar and desktop displayed
second 2 - screen the colour of the wallpaper e.g red in this case.
second 3 - task bar and desktop displayed
second 2 - screen the colour of the wallpaper e.g red in this case.
etc etc

One it has gone into desktop mode the same thing happens on the Metro interface too.

Does anybody know where to start? Google is no help.

Thanks.

What, if anything have you tried so far. You got to start eliminating the possible issues by doing some general diags, boot modes, alternate boot disks, etc.

This is the first ever Windows 8 machine I have had on my bench for a repair, ironically I have two on my bench both G6s but very different issues.

So far all I have done is stopped any necessary programs from starting up, it is very difficult to do anything because of the flashing. I am going to try a system restore (windows restore) ansd then update the drivers etc and update to 8.1.

The issue is desktop related because all the metro apps work fine until I load the desktop. I will also try resetting the theme in case it is something to with that.

I just hate Windows 8, and all this modern EUFI crap. I just spent ten minutes trying to get another G6/W8 machine to boot from a bloody CD.

Sorted it in the end, managed to get into the recovery partition and rolled back windows updates then reinstalled them. Now updating to Windows 81.

I've had this one, had some viruses, removed them and the only way I could fix it was a refresh, sfc, chkdsk, failed and no restore points.
