This is in Russia and what is happening is they have a big cable suspending between the buildings then they wrapped data cables around it between buildings. What you see is essentially the data cables disintegrating.

If the APS UPS was exposed to this kind of destructive power it would melt the innards and probably pop the battery and everything connected to it. Would the insurance from APS cover it? I don't deal with them so no telling.

Very cool pic. I live in an area that gets a lot of lightning over summer, and I can confirm surge protectors don't do much to protect you from a close strike here. I usually advise physically unplugging the tower and phone cable from the adsl modem as the only sure-fire method of protection.

I assisted with a connected equipment warranty claim a while ago for a Belkin surge protector. Lightning hit the customers tree in the backyard and fried all their computer gear, as well as TV & washing machine. They paid up to replace the equipment.

I love seeing lightning at night, I know it will mean a busy day at work tomorrow

I have seen 1,000 kVA UPS sytems transform into melted hulks of metal. A power utility that I was the field service rep for took a direct hit and the op manager asked me why our systems failed.

I walked him outside to the banks of transformers that took a direct hit and pointed out the 12" I beams that were twisted and melted from the energy of one strike.

Lightning has that energy when myths are promoted. A lesser energy event called lightning can connect a massive energy source - AC electric - to cause that damage. The relevant phrase is 'follow through current'.

Routine is to have a direct lightning strike without damage. But only when a human installer has learned basic concepts. One concept - no surge protector does protection. Either a protector connects to what absorbs hundreds of thousands of joules. Or a protector is only a profit center.

Fireworks are also spectaculor. Does that mean fireworks can destroy a city or flatten a building?
