Yeah, you really changed my mind. I'm glad you came across such an unbiased group of people to review his software.

I'm not saying the man shouldn't be respected, but it is obvious he is just trying to make money.

Agreed.

This is also from a SpinRite user.

Yeah. If I were y'all I wouldn't use it. It's pretty much a waste of money ...

Just ask folks who's data that's been recovered with it

It's obvious Steve just wants to make money (and therefore I can make money). Y'all post what you use and what works for you! Maybe we can all add something new and useful to our data recovery toolboxes.

No one here is saying it won't ever work. We just don't think it is the end all, be all of data recovery that Steve makes it out to be. I own it and use it myself.

I listen to Steve's Security Now! podcast and not once have heard him mention making a backup or attempting to get as much data off beforehand as possible.

Leo Laporte is even worse on some of his other shows. He repeatedly tells people to only go to computer shops that own spinrite. He is just trying to bully shops into shelling out the $360 for a technicians license.

Thought I'd update y'all on my experiences with SpinRite. Since the last post I have successfully recovered 4 hard disks (using SpinRite) that I could not backup with either Acronis TruImage or by simply copying the files. CHKDSK either found nothing or would not fix them.

But just last night (and the real reason for this update) SpinRite would not fix a laptop hard disk (stuck for about 36 hours at 18.05%) but CHKDSK /r did! It ran overnight and completed this morning and Acronis just finished taking a snapshot.

So you are right: SpinRite is NOT the "end all" in hard drive repair or data recovery but it certainly does have it's usefulness. I have been fortunate to have made a significant profit in my business using Steve Gibson's SpinRite over the past 5 years. Thanks Steve!
