No Sound

No sound bottom right system tray show red x next to speaker, in device manager high Def audio is in no mans land.
I got driver from HP but noticed it was just a patch to make headset work when HDMI is used, no other audio driver.
I found this, but still not working

Initially internet was not working and Customer tried to install a 3com network card, win 7, 64 bit could not find driver for it, as it turned out his router was defective, new router internet works
I wonder if putting in the 3com caused it, its out now?
He did a bunch of system restores

I have a feeling I am going to end up nuking this, I already spent 90 mins
