Default Fixed first RROD on old xbox 360.

Got myself an old xbox with the RROD off ebay for 9 ($14?) and gave it the heat gun treatment with some flux and new paste.

Shocked that it booted right up! Have been looking to expand my services in this area so think i will buy a few more dirt cheap and fix them up for the experience (+profit).

These are only temp fixes but im just happy to get the experience! Ideally would like to buy professional reballing machines in the near future.

Anyone have any tips in this side of the repair industry?

Yeah, its a waste of time and you will be dealing with a lot of RMAs unless you sell them as is. We have a professional reflow station and it works great, but you can't fix stupid. The original and even the new (even though improved) X-BOX 360s are flawed by design. If you go the reballing route, you are going to spend a lot of money, so you better be doing a LOT of these to even make it worth your time.

I have been asked to fix a couple of these (Turned the work down as I have never had one open), and it is something I have thought about doing.

I also thought about buying a couple on ebay to repair, but haven't yet as I don't want to buy one that has had a bad repair before and made it worse.

Are there any questions I could ask the seller that would prove it has never been opened before?

What are these things worth as a console only in working condition?

Can't you force the motherboard in place with some rubber supports or w.h.y. to prevent warping / reoccurrence?

That's true PCX. I was thinking of offering a really cheap heat-gun fix to people without a warranty and making sure i educate them on what's actually happening and the time it lasts can be a week to 5 months.

People in my area don't have a lot of money, and a cheap fix for a potential few months may be appealing to them? Do you think? All it costs me is some thermal paste and flux at the end of the day.

Sellers can lie easily, so one thing would be getting an honest answer. The one i picked up turns out there was a illegal disc in the drive (a copied game) and the xbox has been modded to allow copied games. However i could sell this friends locally for the same if not better price of an unmodded one.

It's hard to tell if they've been fixed. The one i picked up has thermal paste everywhere literally went off the chip and onto the mobo, couldn't get it all off but got the chips clean. Looks like a serious rookie chucked a crap load on. I wouldn't put that past microsoft though..

Heres my thing. I try not to do anything I cannot warranty because its my name on the line. It does not matter what it is, if it gets screwed up then I have to fix it and or the customer is going to bash my name because it did not work or it did not work for long.

The little money you can make off these is not worth the possibility of messing up your name.
