elance and similar sites, good luck trying to compete with cheap craigslist guys, the indians overseas and any propective customers who knows a friend who's uncle has a neighbor that will do it cheaper. (Notice i didnt say better)

Im not saying there arent good propects out there but I've given up trying to push website design a couple years ago because of the above.

Most people just dont want to spend the money it really takes to make a successful site. They usually get burned by a few webmasters and get a bad taste in their mouth. When I tell them i require 50% deposit some have said "been there done that, and wont do it again", but i wont even start a site without half down.

Good luck

The more businesses I talk to, the more I find out they are not happy with their current website and would love a new one. Just go out and talk to businesses. See if they could benefit from one, and explain how you think/know it could help their business. It can be a little nerve wracking going around talking to business owners but they all have been in your situation starting out.

Getting involved and volunteering with your local Chamber of Commerce is a great way to network and find these kinds of jobs.

Also if you start your own web hosting company you will be able to offer many benefits to the businesses you connect with.

Start out on a shared server, then get a dedicated server after you get enough clients to support it.

I do this and have been going around to various businesses asking if they would like to switch their hosting over to my virtual server. The basic package starts at around $25 and you only need a couple clients for it to pay for itself.

Most business owners would be defensive with this approach.

By getting involved with Chamber, Rotary or other group organizations events, the businesses will ask you for help. You are not there to sell to them on your service, you are there to help the organization put on events and activities. Soft sale is much easier to hook them, they come to you. They see you help the group and the others in the group will help you.

As you volunteer with these groups, you become known to them and establish 'friendships'. Sure it takes time (a few months) to developed these relationships, but it can be very rewarding.
