Default New email sound notification with Outlook but no new emails

I have my email set to check every 2 mins (maybe too often) and I often hear the new email notification but no new emails. Will Outlook play this sound if there is a new email but it falls into a "delete email" rule? I can't figure out why I keep hearing this sound but nothing in the inbox!?

Try a temporary rule disable and see if they come though. Pretty sure Outlook only applies rules after collection so you maybe right

Correct, unless you are using an exchange server rules are handled client side after mail collection.
