Thanks for the heads up. I would usually go the hardware route when I see this (RAM, then hdd)

I guess these rootkits causes problems because they sit above the drivers, etc.

I second the suggestions here, my first guess is a bad hdd. Give it a test. I had bad hdd's that totally stops the computer from booting.

Compare the new one with old one, is it exactly the same?
Try a USED inverter that came out of a broken machine and let me know.
