Shout out to all Techs.

I am having an issue with my DVD drive:
Whenever I boot I will see the DVD Drive listed in "My Computer" after a while it disappears from the list, and I would have to reboot for it to reappear. This is a newly built machine with 2GB RAM; 500GB HD (SATA); DVD Drive (SATA).

Can anyone assist me in finding a solution?

Thanks
Kevin

Have you checked with the manufacturer for any known issues with your brand drive? What type of connection is it? Have you tried swapping the cable out with a new one? Let us know what you have tried so far so we're not stuck throwing things out there that you have already ruled out.

First make sure the drive is showing up in the system BIOS. next I would delete the upper and lower filters in the registry. If that does not work you may have a dieing optical drive or cable.

Here's a file (registry edit) to blow out the filters for you. http://technibble.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=198&d=1236093532

It could be a bad cable, a dying drive, or a driver issue.

I would go like this.
Check if it's showing up in the BIOS
Replace the cable
Check for Driver/Firmware updates
Put in a new drive in place of the old one

If none of those work, then it's probably the motherboard itself.

Exactly what I was going to respond with and you have made it MUCH easier with a simple merge/reboot...but for those that wish to see the manually edited method...

Start, Run, and type REGEDIT press Enter

Expand folders to the following

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Locate on the right any of the below named entries

UpperFilters
LowerFilters
UpperFilters.bak
LowerFilters.bak

Any entires found on right you can delete

Close out regedit and reboot

Now things should be fine.

This seems to fix the problem. Thanks a lot guys and Happy new year to you all.

Ahh, the good old upper lower filter fix. That's quite fun to say actually...
