What is the worst computer you have worked on and why?

I think I had one of the worst machines that ever came into the repair shop. The owner's cat had urinated in the laptop. The customer wanted the information retrieved from the hard drive. The laptop was an original Ibook. In the Ibook you have to take it a good ways apart before you can get to the hard drive in the unit. Was definately the nastiest machine I had seen.

I was able to retrieve the information from the hard drive, although the computer was ruined.

I cant beat your cat-pee story but have come across a PC that was really really dirty with stains on the case and smelt like old cigarettes.

Have you ever seen those news stories about the rental "tenants from hell" that have holes kicked in the walls and garbage as high as the roof? Well, this computer was in one of those houses. It was nasty.. but I dont think it beats your story, I know how bad cat pee can smell.

I had a buddy doing a dell warrenty call for a power supply replacement. The orginal power supply failed because it was full of cockroaches. Needless to say his equipment was not fixed and my buddy left the house right away.

I use that program as well, made it portable and it rides in my usb drive.
as far as the worst machine i have worked on, i'm not sure but i made a house call the other day to get a customers dial up internet up and running. once there i noticed that he had no phone jacks. I explained that dial-up internet works much better with them. :rolleyes:Came back 2 days later after he had jacks installed only to discover that his computer ( a bottom of the line dell) had no modem. Ah , what fun.

Oh , i almost forgot. two weeks ago i was trying to find a house with a dell going out. the woman informed me that it was the one with 100 or so animal cages in the front yard ( we'll call this red flag #1), when i actually found this house and stepped in i almost got sick, the smell was awful. there was at lest 5 dogs 2 cats and a few chickens living in the house. I checked for spyware as the blind dog humped my leg and the chicken supervised.

Lol, that is pretty bad. Been in some messy onsite appointments(Dorm rooms), but nothing like that.

My worst software wise was a system with over 32.000 infected files

Hardware wise was a system about two years ago. Customer came and said computer was not booting up and his son (supposedly a IT Technician) already looked at it but could not find anything.
When I opened the computer I was shocked to find that his son had broken the heat sink retention and cut the CPU fan cables. The CPU was burned of course, the mother board also beyond repair.

Computer terminal in a Rock Crusher at the bottom of a Quartz Quarry. This thing was used to control the size of the crush, different clients required different sizes. It had been down there 8 years. It also had a dialup internet connection so the operator would have something to do between adjustments.

Full tower case literally completly clogged with Quartz dust, it was like they used a funnel to fill it to the top, then packed in some more. The monitor was the same way, I just could not believe that it even worked at all, the fans had stopped spinning long ago. They also insisted that the machine could only be down for an hour, couldn't stop production. It was crippled with spyware, first run of spybot found about 10gb of junk. I sort of got it running again but gave no guarentees.

Up top I toild the situation to the foreman and stongly suggested that they either replace it with a machine built for that environment, or allow me time to clean that one out, seal it up and put a filter on the air intake.

Thankfully they opted for a new machine and allowed me to commission a case to be built with a differential air filter warning (like 18wheeler have for their air filters) so they can maintain it better. I also schooled them in the use of antiviri and anti spyware. None of the machines in the entire company had any protection at all. I spen over a week cleaning machines and deleteing porn. I had never seen so much porn and porn dialers in my life.

I even turned them onto a few "safe" porn sites I have encountered over the years since this was accecptable use in this bunch, Even the Secretary had her own gay porn collection.

5 years later and I'm still shaking Quartz dust out of my hair.

My folks own a rock quarry, so I know all about the dust situation. Even in their office, everything gets dusty. That's why they have filtered computer cases.

I've had my share of confused, misinformed, or just plain ignorant customers, but oddly enough they haven't been much of a problem for me. At the forefront of my mind though is a time where I did a tech call for a nice old gentleman (well over 80 years old) who had purchased a computer so that he could keep in touch with his children. I was working for someone else at the time, and my boss was a bit of a greedy bugger who was hardly customer minded, so he insisted that if I helped the guy it would be on my own time. I was fine with that, and went to visit the gentleman at his apartment in the local old folks home. He was a nice enough guy, and I had him all set up fairly quickly. I also got his printer installed and set up his dial up connection. As I was working I heard an odd sort of creaking noise, but wasn't sure where it came from. I listened to the fans computer for a second, but the sound did not repeat. However sound was the least of my problems, as a ghastly, choking smell confronted me, and I realized that the creaking noise I had heard was the nice old gentleman farting. The smell was overpowering and my eyes began to water, and it was all I could do to keep a straight face. Needless to say I finished my work up quickly and left. Of course when I told my boss his first comment was that I wasn't eligible for hazardous duty pay.

haha..thats funny.. :p

Dont you just love it when you go round to a customers house dressed in your best shirt and tie etc, and the customer insists the 20 yr old dog comes in from outside to sniff and rub itself up against you..

Might not be a bad idea. In going to peoples houses you will see about everything in time, but you will also meet some good people. You are dealing with the public so expect to see the good the bad and the ugly.

Worst computer I've every worked on...
To be fair, most are okay,
but I remember riding my bike to a (former) friend's mothers house,
and worked on her 500Mhz PC.
It was full of trojans, dialers, etc, and it only had 256MB of RAM.
I made the mistake of rebuilding the machine, and then installing some software that slowed the machine down.
I must have gone to that house 3 times, and even though it was a 'friends' I never got paid. Which is a shame, he was a nice guy, but that meanness put me right off. Months later, he offered to pay, I wouldn't touch his money at that stage.

I had a lady bring in an old electronic typewriter once and tell me she wanted windows on it. I told her I couldn't put windows on a typewriter and offered her a new computer. She then started yelling at me that I didn't know what I was talking about because her neighbor gave it to her and he said it was a computer and that I should never call a customer a lier. Sorry... Lier!

Another one was actually my Grandmother. I had bought them a color printer and she sat down and typed a letter in word. Then printed it out and couldn't figure out why it wasn't printing (black text...) in color.

I worked on one that had been in a fire. Oddly enough it still worked but was completely covered in black soot inside and out. That was not fun to cleanup at all. If I remember correctly I charged them extra for the cleanup and they gave me a tip on top of that.

We had one that came in that we called the PEEtop. The customers dog had pissed in the laptop and of course it was dead. We had our worst employee tear it apart and then it sat in double plastic bags untill the customer finally picked it up.

We had another one recently, a fujitsu tablet, customer's roommate vomited in it. Usually for fujitsu, we depot them for the damage plan, but fujitsu didn't want the computer returned so they just replaced it for him.

I have two that I consider my "worst".
The first was a dell dimension tower, fairly plain specs that wouldn't power on/stay powered on. The customer said that it was a web server that they keep in their basement, so they needed it back quickly. On the outside, the system looked fairly normal, a little dirty. When I took the side panel off, several INCHES of dust/sand fell out of the system. My boss at the time had me clean it despite the fact that the components were literally buried and a new computer (and filtration system was in order). Amazingly enough, after cleaning, it worked fine somehow. I think I may still have pictures somewhere....

The second was a typical cat pee computer. Of course, it smelled awful, some cards were fried, and it was our policy to either pack it up and send it home or require it be cleaned and every pee'd on part be replaced. The reason the system's in my worst list is because the customer ended up being an uncle I hadn't heard from in years...

I guess Im pretty lucky. I am disabled and most homes around here are not handicapped accessable so my customers bring me their computers. My worst was a HP which was so dirty that there was no ventilation vents open, it was totally plugged up with cat hair, dust, and smelled bad of cigarette smoke. I have a 2 gallon shop vac that I totally filled up with the junk from that computer. Suprisingly it worked great after a major cleaning and replacing the cpu fan and a case fan. The other was a Gateway laptop that had a broken hinge and after they fixed it I got it, they thought that epoxying the broken hinge would fix it, well they epoxied the laptop shut so now Im looking to buy another case for it but they are hard to find. If anyone knows where I can find a Gateway MX6030 case it would be appreciated. Thanks Jimmy

Ah yeah I hate that how these smokers PCs smell so nasty the smell just attaches itself to anything. Worst I can think of didn't look or smell bad I just had a bad thought in the back of my head. It was a laptop with so many viruses and of course lots of porn. You can figure why I felt the need to wash my hands repeatedly after working on that laptop.

I had another one a while back. Guy calls me up and says his home page has been reset and he needs me to come over at once. When I got there he explained that he was afraid his 12 year old girl would see it when she got home from school. I checked it out and sure enough his home page had been reset to a porn site.

This is where it got bad. I sat my flash drive down and started typing, I noticed the the keys felt greasy. When I went to pick up my flash drive it was sitting in a glob of petroleum jelly.

Two tubs of hand sanitizer and lots of soap and hot water and I still felt dirty.

Not as bad as the cat urine, but I had one that I took in and when I set it down roaches fled out of every orifice, and later on virus scan found 39,991 infected files.

All nasty things related to animals.

1. Found a death mouse in a pc. I think he did a pee on the motherboard, since it was a little yellow eheh.
2. Found two death frogs in a pc :D
3. Same as topic starter. A cat urinated on a laptop, in this case it only needed a keyboard replacement :)
4. A pc which came out of a piggery somewhere. Wow, when you turned that thing on it only blowed a poop smell

I have better days tho ;)

Jesus Christ these stories are horrendous. If I ran into all of these problems I'd probably just open up a shop and stop doing house calls.

The worst thing I had was a customer whose office housed two computers. He had about 15 or so USB devices daisy-chained around his office using USB hubs. He recently bought a new computer and somehow ended up unplugging all kinds of USB devices and then plugging them back in correctly so I had to re-route all of these stupid USB devices so that they would work correctly. It was a pain in the ass but definitely not as bad as anything you guys have listed.

Crazy stories.... In the beginning when i was going onsite, I went to an older gentlemans house to help set up a new system. I get to his office, and he had several guns on the counter. I used to live in Montana, so its a sight im used to, but i still told the guy to put them away or I'd have to leave. He did and I went to work. After talking to the guy, he was ex air force and flew the blackbirds. Ended up being one of my fav visits in the end, you wouldnt believe the stories he had.

The other one i always laugh about is the customer who will pay 100 bucks to tune up a 15 yr old pentium 2 with 256 ram! Just buy a new computer...geez...lol.

Couple of years ago I had a computer in belonging to a vascular surgeon in the local hospital. At the time I still smoked and even I came close to puking. It was a small form factor Compaq orginally that kinda creamy colour nobody else but Compaq could manage. This thing had a coating if cigarette tar you could actually scrape with a pointed tool and that was just on the outside. Anyone who's ever replace the ventilation fans in a bar will know exactly how it looked. I cleaned the outside before opening it. I shouldn't have bothered. The tar was so thick inside that both the ps fan and the cpu fan had seized as a result. At that point I was so close to spewing that I called him and said the pc was dead and that I wasn't doing any further work on it as it was a health hazard. He never called back for it, despite numerous calls to his home and workplace. I eventually removed the hdd and sold the rest for parts for 40 to pay his bill. I still have the hdd somewhere in case he decides to come back.

Also, when in Computer Troubleshooters, one of the Australian franchisees got a call to a customers about a dead PC to find that a snake had crawled into the power supply and shorted it. Problem was the PC had been dead for a week when the customer called, so had the snake

I thought I was the only one who worked on the "Tobacco Tar PC from Hell".

Seriously, how the f-ck do you get a PC this coated with slimey tar ?.

Dude brought in a PC and you can smell it the second he walks in. I boot it and pop open the CDROM tray and the edges of the drive bay are almost sticky with tobacco smoke/tar/oil.

I can't imagine how many thousands of cigarettes this guy must have blown right into this machine to cause this mess. I can still smell it when I think about it.

That has 2 be one of the most disgusting stories yet. I can handle cat pee but not that. I have definitely seen some porn junkies since I have been doing this but luckily I have dodged this bullet thus far.
