What's everyone's impressions on the new version? I have a mac coming in hopefully this week and was wondering if it's worth the upgrade?
I saw some mixed reviews on Amazon so far...

If moving from Leopard (10.5.x) it will actually free up approx 10GB of drive space by eliminating the Power PC code. Haven't seen what the results will be moving from Tiger(10.4.x) to Snow Leopard(10.6.x), but I'm sure it will free up significant drive space in that scenario as well. Even if you need to run Power PC apps Rosetta is not one of the default installs during the installation which I didn't understand, especially since its a 1.9 MB option. But even if its not selected and you try to run a PPC app it will prompt you to install Rosetta through software update as opposed to popping in the installer to do so. One neat function is activity monitor lists each 64 bit process running.

To sum it up if you liked Leopard you'll love Snow Leopard. I think so far it is rock solid stable. Haven't had, seen, or heard of any flaky issues. I find it very efficient and streamlined so far. If upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 very worth the $29 or $49 for the family pack for that matter. If going from 10.4 its not urgent yet because a significant drop in support for 10.4 hasn't really happened yet like it did to 10.3 when 10.5 was released. But then its still fairly early to tell, but I still think you are safe so far. The install from 10.4 to 10.6 is supposed to cost $129 or $169 for the box set with iLife, but in regards that here (http://osxdaily.com/2009/08/28/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard-upgrade-works-on-tiger-104-machines/) is an interesting and controversial read.

Any time, hope you enjoy the Mac. Post some specs about the machine when you get it.

I ended up going with a white macbook. My wife was a major influence on this. She loves the white. I got it from a guy on craigslist for $350. He's supposed to drop it off this week. Not really sure if I got a deal or not but it seemed cheap enough. I mainly want to familiarize myself with the OS and then I'll get started on with the hardware side of it. It has 10.4 so I may upgrade in the future.

1.83GHz Intel Core Duo Processor
13.3-inch Widescreen Display (glossy)
1.0GB RAM
60GB Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
GMA 950 video card (64MB) 1280x800 resolution
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
Airport Extreme Card

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I am removing a virus from his mom's computer as part of the deal. Sounds like it's PAV so it shouldn't be that big of a deal :)

That's actually a pretty darn good deal! The cheapest I see those going for are usually around $600-$650 on most resale sites. My partner is selling his original macbook with a 2.0Ghz processor for $600. I have two white macbooks and love them. The macbooks are known for failed HDs at one time or another but that's a cheap and extremely easy fix. Other than that the originals like yours had a batch of bad heatsinks (another cheap part/relitively easy fix) but just about all of those have been fixed. The top cases are known for splintering at the palm rests (just a cosmetic issue) for which if the machines are under 3 years old and in fair condition, Apple is paying for those to be replaced whether in warranty or not. Other than those issues which are just minor inconveniences they are great machines. Get me the serial # when you get it to check its eligibility for a top case replacement (if it needs it) and history.

Great, I'll let you know about the top case. Thanks again for your help.

Yeah I have replaced many dead hard drives in the Macbook computers. I did notice they changed the hard drive cage design and made it perforated instead of a solid piece on the replacement drives.
