I have a clients machine that seems to be stuck in a reboot loop. The machine has windows vista. I cleaned up the malware and the viruses but the machine is stuck in a constant reboot mode when I click on a user profile. Currently I cannot perform a vista repair as I cannot get into the desktop to start the process. I am sort of stuck as to what to do. I can backup all the files and do a factory restore but I would like to make that the last option. I also cannot go back to the last known good config or use system restore to go to a previous point as there are no saved points.

Did you try booting from the Vista DVD and going through the repair options from there?

Had a machine last week that did the same thing. Was stuck on the welcome screen loop, never actually crashed. Safe mode as well. I think they had autologin enabled, which probably explains why it went one step further. Checkdisk, and the vista boot cd sytem repair tools could not fix it. I couldn't solve the problem, the client was happy with a reinstall though. I feel so unfamiliar with vista repairs.

I've had this problem before.
If you have a boot disk (UBCDWIN), use it to start the computer and check to see if userinit.exe (C:\windows\system32) and explorer.exe (C:\windows) is there. If not, copy it from another computer and place it in the proper folder. Make sure it's the same version of Vista and service pack.

Also, load the registry and go to: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersio n\Winlogon
Once there, check to see if the value data of Shell is Explorer.exe and Userinit is C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe, make sure the comma is at the end.

Hope that helps you!

I have tried the vista repair option through the Vista dvd.

Will try userinit.exe replacement, I know XP had similar issues that could be resolved by replacing that file.

1. Insert the Vista DVD into the DVD drive while your current Vista is running.
WARNING: Do not boot the computer and run the Vista installation DVD from boot. A upgrade install will not work this way.

He cannot get to that point to be able to even start with Step #1.
