I am thinking about advertising in Yellowbook which is one of the two major phone books in the area. The sales lady seemed desperate to sell some space. She wanted to give me two headings with 1 inch ads, plus interent advertising for $39 a month. The book doesn't come out until next spring. I would put down a 1 month deposit now and billing would start when the book goes out. My internet advertising would start now and continue until my phone ad was done.

1. A "heading" means one of their categories, correct?

2. This seems pretty reasonable from what I have seen. I think I heard Steve from podnutz says he payed like $215 a month? However, I am certainly not in the Philedalphia area.

3. Is there any negotiating with Yellowbook ad reps? At this price, I don't know how far down I have that I can goin pricef, but could I barter for bigger ads?

4. Are the ads the quote is for text only ads, or am I automatically allowed to do an image based ad?

You may consider bartering with her for a discount by offering to pay for 6 months or a year in advance. I did that with my local newspaper and saved half off on their normal ad rates. My friend, a painting contractor, did that with the "Real" yellowpages (AT&T) and he got the same kind of deal.

ive had pretty good luck with the phone book, but i think it depends on competition and the quality of the ads you and others make. I would probably ask them if it was a visual ad etc. they usually have some examples you can look at.
