This one stumped microsoft and HP techs they did remote access to try to fix the sound problem.
Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 driver in vista 32 they uninstalled and re-installed sound drivers no sound, they tried everything on hp website to troubleshoot , still no sound even microsoft gave up.
Has anyone fixed this problem before?.
The devices show up in device manager as ok all drivers show up ok i even manually wrote down all drivers deleted them by hand and tried to re-install still no sound.

I had this problem before. Go into your playback device menu, and make sure that the output is set to the speakers and not digital output or independent headphones. On another note, I had several HPs with IDT audio chips have driver issues. I wound up downloading the IDT drivers from Dell's site, and solved the issues.

Background: I have exactly the same operating system as this poster, and I did exactly the same thing in disabling the speakers, with the same result.
The Fix:Open up "Sounds", click on the "Playback" tab. Right click in the box that is displayed. This should bring up a message saying "show disabled devices". Click on that, select Conexant smartaudio 221.Double click on that, and then down at the bottom where it says "device usage", click on "use this device(enable)".
Problem solved.
Stupid programming on behalf of the conexant team I have to say.
See if that works for you. Here is the source. (http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/driver-support/284738-disabled-conexant-hd-smartaudio-221-driver-cannot-re-enable.html)

Nope did not work that was first thing i tried as well as microsoft tech and hp tech.
There is no volume mixer for device says there are no device drivers installed yet device manager shows them running with no problems.
My guess there is a corruption in the registry, i would try a system restore but there are no restore points to where it was working customer waited too long to bring it in , i am going to image the drive, re-install factory default and compare the registry to see what could have caused this.
