So I have an XP machine set up using RDC and I'm trying to figure out how to get RDC to be enabled before I login to the console session. I don't want to have to be at the physical computer to hit login when Windows Update decides to run a stupid update at 3 in the morning and reboot on me.
Any ideas how to make this work? I know it's possible because I have another computer that does it, just not sure what I did to make it do it and I'm not around it right now (it's at my office and I'm at a client's)
Thanks.

You can save the RDC session along with the user ID and password and then create a .bat file that runs at startup to start the connection.

But that's going to require a user logging in on the "server". I don't want that. I basically need RDC to start as a service (pre-login) instead of starting up after I choose a user LOCALLY on the server.

If the server is on Windows 2003 server or greater, it should attempt to log into the server using the credentials supplied. You wouldn't have to log in the second time.

I'm confused. Is the XP machine hosting the RDP connection, or are you connecting to a server based machine? Either way, you don't have to have a console session running to connect remotely. I reboot hosts remotely all the time. If someone had to be there to first log in locally, it would pretty much defeat the purpose. As for automatic updates, turn them off. On any ms machine hosting rdp, I turn off automatic updates because I don't want the machine rebooting unless I tell it to. I also don't want lower level users clicking on a prompt to install updates.
