Hi, I got a laptop where when you move the screen back and forth on the hinges it gets weird lines on it but moving it around fixes it. I am assuming this means the connector to the screen is a little loose or something? I just wanted to double check before i open this baby up.

Hmm..... maybe I should fly first class up to where you live and bitch slap you like there is no tommorow. Come on, you answer your own question but don't do any diagnostics and want us to guess ?. Punch yourself in the balls for each person that bothers to respond to you here.

I would go for the connector as well, but just strip it down and you will soon now.

The smiley face at the bottom of that post shows I am ribbing you a little, but still, you MUST get into that machine and build your skills. Do alot of reading and watch youtube videos when possible. I am making alot of money now specializing in laptops in just my own county, you can do that to.

Don't rush into it. First see if there is anyone out in GoogleLand who has done a tear down on your laptop before. It's a real treat when you find someone has a step-by-step help page or even video for what you are about to do.
BTW- if you tell us the make/model/sn/pn of the machine we might be able to help you a little more.... just sayin........

Laptop repairs, especially if you can do motherboard diagnostics, elevates you WAY above the other 90% of the techs who just brag about "speeding up your PC" or "cleaning out viruses".

Dell Inspiron 640M, the screen's hinges also feel a little loose or something.
I really do want to learn how to do laptops more, noone does them in my area very much

That's true. Once you've done a hundred of them or so you'll be shelling them like clams. Invest in some nylon probe tools (spudgers) as they are going to be your best tool for laptop repairs. But you've got the right idea looking for pinched/strained cables and connections.

Well I took it apart the front part and the frame around the screen, and behind the screen and checked for any loose connections and reseated the connections. Now I seem to be getting weird box like pictures instead of the normal stuff. Any ideas? I believe this is what the customer had before.. but moving the screen use to fix it now it does not.
Also the one main cord seems to be fairly pinched, are these universal or do they go by laptop?

No, I am fairly fresh with laptops to be honest. I did buy a couple old ones and practice ripping them apart. I figured the cord would just be loose.

I think you are referring to the LVDS cable and I'm pretty sure they are proprietary. But giving some some specs would probably give you better answers on that. Why don't you check the external video output just to be sure its a display issue?
Wow, Never heard of that before, I totally just googled that, I saw it and bought it immediately, looks helpful, thanks Mac Tech :D
Sure thing! Great thing is they are non conductive and great for any delicate issues with laptops. I always keeps an ample supply because they good for a lot of things really. You'll even find creative ways for using them with any repair.

He said it is a Dell 640M earlier.
I would check out that pinched video cable. Order a new one online and replace it.

Well now it is gone to just a couple rectangles and flashes and a dark screen, nothing seems to come up on the display from an external monitor but i know it was working before, with the graphic error. Would I be correct in assuming its new screen time?

if you have a flash light, look at the screen with the flash light, if you see windows then it's the inverter.

Also don't forget if you want to view the laptop to a external monitor, you have to change the settings in the bios, if you still can't view it on the external monitor, you may have a video problem

I have also been dragged kicking and screaming into laptop repairs but that is where 80% of my work is now. So. . without hijacking the thread, here is my advice. Know your limitations and don't promise beyond what you really can accomplish. Collect some old laptops and tear them down and put them together. Collect your screws on a piece of styrofoam so you remember which goes were (and therefore do not punch a hole in the MB on reassembly. Get the nylon probes. Get a good gooseneck magnifying light. Keep www.laptoprepair101.com (http://www.laptoprepair101.com) in your bookmarks and when you have a spare minute. . . . read random things. Link to as many laptop SERVICE manuals as you can find, or better yet, save the pdfs for future reference on the same unit.
Just some thoughts. :D

You wouldnt happen to have a digital camera you could take a picture with and upload it so we could see what this looks like?

Yeah laptop repair is nice if you are one of the few that do it. Especially DC jack repairs. I have had people bring them in where they took it to a friend or another pc guy and had it totally screwed up. Tons of solder and burnt up.

Laptop repair is a hot commodity right now. Most of the pc repair shops near you will send you their laptop repairs that they can't do. Don't rush in though.
DC jack repairs are good. +1 batemantech. Over time, you'll be able to diagnose laptop problems very easily(after about 1-2 years). I too would take a laptop repair any day over a pc repair.

yes, ive seen the statistics of laptop sales. I need to learn this stuff.. That being said.. Heres an update..
Laptop isn't "dark", you can see the images on the screen. but images appear as distorted fast moving squares, similar colour to what is on the screen.
Also when screen is on it makes a loud buzzing noise now.
External display works fine with key combination. Thanks michana for the assist on that one. So it is definitely the screen, or cord.
Is there any way to test the cord with a multimeter or something?
JRDtechnet

take a picture of the fast moving squares for us. Right now though I'm inclined to lean towards faulty lcd, namely the LCD IC...the thing that says "DO NOT TOUCH" but since that's not replaceable you'll have to get a new LCD. See if your buzzing sound is coming from that IC and then you'll know.

The buzzing noice you can hear is coming from the inverter, if you strip the screen out and put you ear next to the inverter you will see thats where the buzzing is coming from, i still say you need to replace the inverter.

im not sure why you are saying inverter, seeing how that powers the backlight and has nothing to do with displaying the images on the screen.

The inverter may be going, but I do not see how this will affact the images on the actual screen, besides making them dim or hard to see.
I will admit that I may not be the best at diagnosing laptops, but I am not aware of a bad or dying inverter causing the actual images on the screen to mess up.
maybe I amreading your responseses wrong and you're only trying to fix the buzzing, not the graphics issues.

You may have more then one problem, order a new cable and see if that corrects the problem, there are not that expensive.

Order a new cable assembly, please.
Rationale: Works ok with external monitor (rules out the graphics card/onboard graphics). You get something on the screen (CCFL probably OK). Inverter may also be bad, but try the cable assembly first. Symptoms earlier described as changing when the laptop lid was moved or jiggled (big clue). Loose hinges (another big clue).

Actually the hinges were kind of loose.. now that you mention it.. but how is that a hint of a bad cable?

08-04-2009, 10:08 PM
It's either the cable or the lcd itself is bad. When you have the bezel off wiggle the cable a bit where it goes near the hinge and see if that makes the screen act up. If it doesn't then it's the display that's bad.

have you tried running the built in Dell diagnostics via F12?.... i believe there is a test that you can do to check on whether the inverter is ok or not..

+1
Wiggling the cable will help you determine the source of the problem. I would also replace the inverter just in case. They are usually pretty cheap and it wouldn't hurt to be safe.

That's not an inverter problem. All the inverter does is light the lamp up.
