Alright I am working on a pc that has over 3082 of the new 32win virus showing up on mcafee. I dont want to remove them because this pc is used to do taxes and afraid programs will become unresponsive if done. I am going to use combofix, cc cleaner and probably AVG. Question is will I have to worry about programs becoming unresponsive if I do this. Never had a pc with this many on it. Please only post if you are trying to help. Thanks.

Wow. That is a lot. But yes, there's always a risk; that's why you always want to backup the client's data before starting any major malware cleanup and collect any activation codes or keys if you can, and any program installer & update packages downloaded that you can find (desktop, My Documents, Download folder in Vista, etc.). Programs can always be reinstalled if you have the source media... it's the data that's irreplaceable if you don't have a backup.

Once you know you've got a good backup and all the information you would need to reinstall and activate programs, proceed with your malware cleanup as usual.

Yeah for some reason the client does not want to do a back up  but going to stress to them I need to do this before I proceed.

For me personally, I back things up automatically. This way you are covered in case something does go wrong. Just back up their data and more forward. That's my recommendation.

Yeah I think the customer is thinking about cost but Im not going to be responsible for something they do not want to pay extra for. I am going to tell them unless we back up I am not going to touch it. If they do it on their own its on them.

Whether you back the data up or not is your choice. Just make sure you have the customer sign something so this situation does not come back to haunt you, especially if they do not want you to back up their information.

Yeah I just downloaded the business kit and found documents for that. Going to start using them.

You should talk to them about backups hard drives are the number one part in a pc to fail, they can fail at any time taking ALL the data with it.

I had business customers that did not do any backups they got hit with lighting it fried every chip in there computer including all the chips on mainboard for the hard drive.

Only way to recover the data is to remove the platters and put them in a special reader in a special clean room =1000-2000 dollars.

Not having any backups is the worst thing for anyone doing taxes or bookkeeping.
