Keep in mind I am very new to open-source Linux OS and have lots to learn. I own a Mac, however they are somewhat different and apples come with an OS that supports and knows all it's hardware. I know Dell has started selling some of their computers with Linux, I believe it's ubuntu actually. ubuntu studio is only a pimped out version of ubuntu for music, graphic, and video production (site note: it has lots of amazing programs that come with it for free for anyone out there interested in that).

So I've successfully installed ubuntu studio on a 2nd harddrive on my Dell. I dual boot from Win. or Ubuntu. My question is, I cannot figure out how to get my wireless card, Linksys Wireless PCI w/SpeedBoost card to work. As I am a beginning in Linux and still learning, wanting to learn a lot in time, I have no idea how to do it. Linksys does not have a Linux driver for the card that I could find. I've tried a few steps online I found on google, with no luck. And I don't think those ideas were from the smartest people.

Everything else works fine, audio, video cards, all that it picked up and works, but won't pick up my wireless PCI. Which sucks because, I rent a fairly large guest house from someone, and have no direct plugin since the router and modem are in the main house, I only have wireless access. (yes they didn't think about running one cable down here so I can setup my own router. - bad planning)

Do I need a different PCI wireless card or what exactly do I need to do? Would it help if I walked my computer up, plugged it in the router directly and then see if I can configure the wireless card or if it automatically does it? I'm lost, and would really love to get this to work. (The internet does work when I just plug it in, however where my computer needs to be located right now, only has wifi access.

ARE THERE ANY LINUX EXPERTS OR SOME WHAT OF AN EXPERT HERE TO HELP ME? Tell me what to do, or how to get this thing to work. I am in love with ubuntustudio just as much has my mac, the programs it comes with for free, I've had to spend well over $1,200 to get them on my mac. And I'd like to turn this dell into a Linux machine so I have two and so I can save $2,500 on a Mac Pro if this thing is working.

Any suggestions, ideas, instuction tips, whatever I will be very grateful for. Thank you for taking the time to read my problem and taking the time to help out a newbie at this Linux stuff. Thanks again.

If there are no drivers for your PCI adapter, you might try a supported USB adapter.

I dont play with linux that often... And nowadays never. The card you have WORKS with ubuntu I used it many, many times. It also supports the more advanced features needed for breaking router encryption. So while I can offer no help only a confirmation that the card and OS do work seamlessly. I do believe my driver was downloaded via Ethernet automatically from the OS.

Rereading your post, I believe the easiest newbie way (linux=me) would be to get some internet going Ethernet and let Ubuntu load the drivers.

Hopefully someone comes to your rescue on this forum if that is not an option.

Good luck.

If there really isn't linux hardware support for your card, you might have to try NDISWrapper. There's plenty of support and instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper

Being lazy that's exactly what I did with a PCI NIC one time that didn't want to work in Ubuntu 9.04.
