This is pretty much down to the point I suppose. I own my shop. I have had it 3 years. I make a decent living and our profits tend to increase monthly but not as fast as one would hope. I would like to know from other business owners in the forums their experiences with what works and what doesn't in regards to driving profits.

Here are a few of my lessons learned:

I have found that we need residential and business clients to make the money we want to make although we would rather not be working with the residential.

A ridiculous amount of money comes in monthly from virus/spyware removal fees.

Found that flyer advertising usually fails but amazingly enough yellow pages/yellowbook advertising pays for itself over and over again each month.

Found that customers look at the quality of website and generally call the best looking one in their area (been told this numerous times)

any other input from owners?

I definitley agree with you on those points. Unfortunatley I don't know about the YellowPages as we haven't got in yet, but we will be in next edition.

Spyware & Virus removal makes up 75% of my residential work. Otherwise it is usually custom computer builds or misc. repairs.

As I just said in a previous post, 5,000 flyers in 3 months = 1 call for me.

I also think you are right on the money with the website thing. That is half the reason I haven't launched my real site yet...trying to make it look as best as I can. I have a small flash video on there now and customers always mention it.

To add to your list, word of mouth is one powerful thing. One customer starts talking and it really gets others to call.

You really have to work your ass off these days in this business - noone ever said it was going to be easy, but it does give you a sense of pride in what you have built.

Yes the phone book and the website are the best sources of new interest. We also get a lot of referrals though from other businesses and people who find us online and tell other people.
