I recently discovered another software version update checker called Update Notifier (http://cleansofts.org/view/update-notifier.html) by Cleansofts.org.
I like its interface. Also, the one thing it has that the others do not is the ability to check for updates on a folder of portable apps! Like FileHippo's, it checks only for software that it has in its download repository.
The others are:
KCSoftwares' SUMo (http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?sumo) (Software Update Monitor) - Excellent. Based upon what the other 12,000 (so far) users have installed.
FileHippo Update Checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) - Checks only for software that it has in its download repository
Secunia's PSI (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) - (Personal Use) Focused on software and OS components with security issues listed in Secunia's database.
