There appears to be an E-mail being sent out to Gmail users at the moment that may catch them out even though clearly it is phishing scam.

The reasons for this is:

Gmail's spam filter is normally very good

The E-mail address is from the following: winners@googlelotto.com which looks like it is owned by Google but it isn't.


Dear Sir/Madam,
This mail is to notify you have been selected as a winner to receive the sum of £850,000 British Pounds in our on-going Google anniversary lotto draws.

Your email address was attached to the following winning numbers that made you one of our lucky winners for this year draw :Ticket number: 00869575733664, CGPN:7-22-71-00-66-12,Serial numbers:BTD/8070447706/06,Lucky numbers:12-12-23-35-40-41(12).
For more info/ how to claim your prize,contact the processing agent (Mr. Grahams Benfield) with the email addresses below by sending your winning numbers,full names, sex and location.

If you do follow up on this (foolishly) you will receive a follow up E-mail that clearly screams "I'm a phishing scam"!

This message was sent to you because you won a lottery programme., In the amount stated at the top right corner.

googlelotto leads you to a site called "Casinoeuro", which has nothing to do with Google.

So, no. You have not one any Lottery.

But if you do follow up you will end up losing money.

Crafty buggers aren't they! I'm sure some poor sod will fall for it though!

I have my old college email address that has been active for years which is just an old IMAP account I use to see if old friends are trying to find me or whatever. It has the filter set on high but every 9 out of 10 emails I receive is a scam like that. Sometimes I think the college email server just funnels all the crap to my address.:mad:

Every e-mail that starts with "Dear Sir/Madam..." is a scam))))
