I have tried removing drivers and re-installing has no effect , if it was xp i would have no problems fixing but vista is another story.

check to be sure the audio properties are using the notebook speakers as output. Vista has a nasty habit of assigning the line out or headphones for output. Also, I had a run of hp notebooks with the IDT audio chip. The HP drivers would never work, so I downloaded the driver from dell. Worked like a charm.

Dumb question: Have you tried downloading the HD drivers straight from conexant or realtech?

There are no drivers for it on conexant website im going to try to download a similar driver for same chipset from toshiba.
I know vista uses an openAL system for sound it maybe possible that the vista sound system is corrupt.
