Dvdisaster will try to make a complete image from a bad disc even across different dvd drives. It's best to use BEFORE you burn the disc or it goes bad to make a parity file. Also you might try something like ddrescue on linux.

i thought dvdisaster only worked off images?

According to wikipedia

dvdisaster can be helpful to recover the contents of a damaged disc even when no ECC data is available. The entire disc can be read into an image, skipping damaged parts. dvdisaster can then repeatedly rescan just the missing parts until all damaged areas have been filled in by correct data.
