A client called and wanted me to replace his broken laptop lcd screen with a new one he already purchased from DELL. He assured me that they sent him the correct lcd screen for his model of laptop. Upon inspection after taking out the old one I noticed that the new lcd screen inverter connection was 2 inch shorter than the old one. And to make it harder for me the new one did not have the two little notches for the inverter to hook into to. Even though it still had foil tape to hold it all together.
So what would you do in a situation like this? Would you call the customer and explain what is wrong or if you knew 100% that you could modify the connector and make it work would you go ahead with the modification? All I would have to do is to extend the inverter connection at least another 1 1/2" to make everything all fit together nicely.
So after carefully consideration, I went ahead with the inverter modification.
1. The 1st thing I did was connect everything together to make sure it worked before I started.
2. The old one had just the right size of wire that I needed to make the new one longer.
3. I cut the old one off 1st to see if I would be able to connect the wires to the new one.
4. After checking all the above, I made the decision to go ahead with the required mod and took all the risk if anything happened.

So I guess my question is... Would any of you do this modification or would you simply call the client and tell them they got the wrong lcd screen and would have to send it back and try to get the correct one? Mind you that everything was identical to the old one except the inverter connection length.

thanks....

I would simply explain that they didn't order the correct LCD screen and that you could make it work or they would have the option to get the correct LCD screen.

I sort of went through the same deal yesterday. The customer calls me and tells me he has an LCD he ordered off Ebay and asked if I could install it. I looked up the correct part number and there are 6 different screens for this particular model. I call him back with 2 different screen models that will work with his and somehow he had ordered the correct one.

I think you are saying you extended the wires so the inverter would line up with some sort of mounting studs? You don't have to 'mount' the inverter. It can just sit loose in the case and there will be no problem. Tape it down with some high temperature tape if you want but it's not going anywhere.

I have never had to do this but the biggest problem I see is if you modify the new item you are going to void any warranty you may have on that item. For that reason, I would suggest the customer attempt to get the correct part.

I agree with voiding the warranty if I did any of the modding of the lcd screen and it stoped working within the warranty period. But I did it in such a way that I was able to slip the original wires back on the connector just like I never did a thing to it. But if I knew that I couldn't get it back to the way I recieved it...Yes, I would just tell the client that he had to send it back and to get the correct one. Thanks for all the fedback!
